By combining standards-based instruction with UDL, teachers can follow a five-step process for designing lessons that engage and support all students in rigorous learning. Steps 1 through 3 are based on standards-based instruction, which helps educators establish a clear pathway (of learning) that is clearly aligned to a specific grade-level standard. Steps 4 and 5 leverage Universal Design for Learning to help educators identify key learning barriers present in an individual’s learning.

College Park Academy (CPA), a public charter school in Prince George’s County, Maryland, uses a blended learning model to prepare students for the top colleges and universities in the nation. The school opened its doors at the start of the 2013–2014 academic year and provided students with a leased laptop and a 100-percent digital curriculum. After just one year, administrators, teachers, parents, and students have become acclimated to a new way of teaching and learning, and students are performing well on state tests. To reach as many students’ needs as possible, Troy School District opened Intersect Virtual High School during the 2012- 13 school year. Soon it was apparent that the online curricula provider they chose did not meet their high quality needs. By switching providers the virtual high school was able to improve communication throughout the school, especially with students and parents, which improved the academic performance of the students and resulted in higher completion rates in just one year.
